Adventure is out there!

What could be more fun than a day at the Disney Parks, you ask? Well, what about an Adventureland themed day filled with scavenger hunts, creative themed outfits, and group photos? This only begins to describe the magical time that we had adventuring through the Magic Kingdom on Adventureland Day! Now while we are certainly bigger fans of WDW, than Disneyland there's one thing Disneyland truly knows how to do and that's themed events. Walt Disney World has slowly but surely been adding more events like it and we couldn't be more thrilled. After all events like Dapper day, are what have helped us make some of our closest friends. These events help us meet fellow vintage aficionados who not only love Disney but also the fashion and history of it. So we were over the moon when we heard that we were getting Adventureland Day over here.

This year was the inaugural year for Adventureland Day meaning we knew we had to go! We had to show our support for this event by showing up in true “thehepburnmovement” fashion aka dressed to the 9s and a tad bit late! We made it with minutes to spare to do the scavenger hunt which we were a little too excited about, but who can blame us when the clue cards were so cute and the prize was amazing!? The scavenger hunt was around Adventureland (with one location being in Frontier land), the locations of each clue were drawn on a map depicting the area and at each location a clue card was given that made a riddle to the final destination. Once we arrived at the final destination we were able to locate the prize which were wooden necklaces (though we will probably make them into brooches) by Miller Made Goods Co, Tiki Tony, and Match accessories.

Taking in the creative ways in which guests captured the spirit of Adventureland through their clothing was one of our favorite parts of the day! Ensembles and Disneybounds ranged from Jungle Cruise Skippers to Indiana Jones to Enchanted Tiki Room birds. Witnessing so much creativity was truly inspiring, and we loved every minute of it!

Her heart changed and the sun shone upon her

We here at the thehepburnmovement strive to show the diversity of pinup/vintage culture every chance we get, to show that ANYONE and everyone can be a pinup regardless of your age, sexual orientation, or race. That despite the lack of representation in the media, we exist and are here to inspire others to step out into the spotlight. People from all kinds of nationalities and identities make up this community and we aim to show that with every post. We want to highlight the wide variety of pinup/vintage loving people because they come from all walks of life, and deserve to be seen. This weeks pinup is...

We met Monique thanks to the online vintage community on Instagram, we had been mutual followers for awhile and really admired her style and her relationship with her daughter. It wasn't until a few months ago, that it blossomed into friendship and we are so glad to have met her. Monique is a fiercely kind, outspoken, well dressed and all around incredible woman. She is not afraid to speak her mind, or offer insight on topics she deems important. She is an advocate of women's rights, strives to provide representation for minorities and an amazing role model. She's like the modern day equivalent of superwoman, as she dresses this way while being a full time mom. It is with great pleasure that we share her story with all of you today.

When did you first get into the pinup/vintage life style ?

Growing up with a father who loved old movies and shows, I was drawn to the style very early on.
Watching I Love Lucy and Leave it to Beaver, although both shows were in black and white, I was drawn to the style of clothing, the furniture, the makeup, and just the era as a whole. The very first VHS movie that I personally owned was Grease. My 8 year old self would watch this movie every single day until the tape finally got stuck in my VHS Player. Slowly but surely, photos and posters of Marilyn Monroe would adorn my walls and school binder.
This gradual progression of love and obsession FINALLY came to a head when I was around 15 years old. I was sitting outside of a local pharmacy, waiting for my mom, when two girls passed by. They looked like they were both in their early twenties and were both dressed in full pinup attire. One was in a full skirt 1950’s style dress and the other in more 1940’s style clothing. Both had victory rolls in their hair, inky black cat eyeliner, and beautiful bold red lipstick. To top it all off they were both “Hispanic”. The neighborhood I grew up in, Barrio Logan in San Diego, is predominately Mexican so it safe to assume that they were in fact Mexican too! I can not even begin to explain what this moment meant for me. To know that an era and style I had grown to love so dearly could be worn out like regular clothing and look THAT amazing?! To see the positive reactions of people as they walked by, myself included. To know that as a young Chicana girl from the “hood”, I too, could dress this way! To see how beautiful they looked against the harshness of the concrete neighborhood. It was a pivotal moment in my life that I wish I could have captured. This moment lit a desire inside of me that would live on for many years. I knew someday, when I was confident enough in myself, I would dress just like them.
...I walked into my first pinup boutique... purchased my first swing dress and wiggle dress. The rest is history ;)

Who is your biggest style inspiration ?
This may sound extremely corny BUT my 8 year old daughter is my biggest style inspiration. I started dressing up right after I had her so I feel like she’s played a big roll in the evolution of my wardrobe. For special occasions I try coordinate our outfits and she absolutely LOVES it. I know it won’t last forever, so I’ve been taking advantage of it for as long as I can...WHEN I can. Kids can be finicky. Lol.
I also realized recently that my style often mimics things she currently loves. She went through a bug phase and within that time I acquired a dragonfly dress and a couple butterfly dresses as well. Seeing her excitement over a dress in a favorite color, a dress that matches something she’s going to wear, or a dress that has a print of something she loves, really makes dressing this way even more special.
A lot of what I wear gets Maiya’s “two thumbs up” or  her “Mom! You need that. You love flowers!” approval prior to purchasing. It feels great to know that this little human you’re in charge of raising is interested and excited about something that means so much to you. Plus, I’m secretly hoping that she’ll grow up loving the style and dress up with me.

How does it feel to be a minority in the pinup community ?

Being raised in a strictly minority area and being introduced to the pinup culture directly from fellow minorities in my neighborhood... I was a bit surprised and offended when I realized how little representation POC have in the pinup community.
When I first started looking online for pinup style clothing, I noticed there weren’t many, if any, “ethic” models.
Now that the culture is continuously growing, it’s refreshing seeing all of these beautiful women representing all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
I’m just happy that I get to be a part of it and hope that someday I can be the inspiration for a young Mexican girl, like those beautiful and confident women were for me when I was 15.

We hope you enjoyed this weeks "Any one can be a pinup post"; it was an honor to share Monique's story with all of you. Melissa

We have known Melissa for years thanks to the online pinup community, our mutual love of clothes is what  made us friends, but our passion for woman's rights and minorities everywhere is truly what brought us together. Melissa is a huge inspiration, she is an advocate for self love, body positivity, a champion of woman's rights and a loud and strong voice for minorities everywhere. She is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in or to voice her opinion regardless of what others might think. She inspires us daily to be true to ourselves and shows that moms really are super heroes, because she's up there with Wonder Woman for us. We are so honored to be able to share her story with all of you today

When did you first get into the pinup/vintage lifestyle?

I always loved watching old musicals and movies from the Golden Age. The costumes and dresses fascinated me as a kid. I didn’t really start to dress in pinup/vintage style clothing full-time until after I had my daughter and went back to work. I figured out pretty quick the easiest least fuss for me to look put together for my job was to “slap a dress on it”. Plus- around that time I figured I didn’t have to dry clean all of my nicer things like I thought. It was getting prohibitively expensive and the nearest place is like an hour from where I live.

Who are you biggest style inspirations?
My biggest style inspirations honestly are other women on Instagram. I love seeing other ladies just being their own damn selves and putting their own twists and spins on their outfits. No matter what they may be. They continually inspire me to wear what I want for myself and nobody else. Which feels a bit radical and rebellious because most of us grew up in the time of Cosmo and other media constantly telling us what beauty was. What we should be. Which is laughable because beauty is something we can create ourselves. And people should always be what they wish. Not what others want them to be. Life is far too short to live it to anyone else’s expectations but our own.

How does it feel to be  a WOC in the pinup/vintage community?

I’ve never felt nothing but welcomed by others in the pinup community- even as a minority. Maybe I had the good fortune to meet and fall in with kind beautiful hearted women. I know there aren’t a lot of us out there in media being represented- but again- this is why I love IG so much. We create our own. We show everyone that pinup/vintage style is for EVERYONE and every body type if that is what they want to choose for themselves.

I’ve met some of the most talented, skilled, intelligent, hard working, and successful in their various fields of choice women through the “pinup/vintage community” via Instagram and then the various groups on Facebook as well. These women have inspired me, taught me, and helped me through some dark moments. They’ve helped me to become a better public servant to the people I serve. They’ve made me ugly cry because my heart was so full when they surprised me out of nowhere with a vintage skirt I had wanted for a while after my husband and I tragically lost a friend a few years back when he was on his way to our house for dinner. On my worst toughest days where I see the sheer horribleness of what other humans are capable of...they restore my faith in humanity. They help me hang on to my compassion and empathy. They re-light my spirit so I can keep doing what I do best...which is help people.

While i’ve never experienced anything but love and acceptance from others in the pinup/vintage community. It is not all sunshine and rainbows, I know and have seen the racist and ignorant comments people make towards people of color especially if they speak out voicing their concerns regarding racism. I do my best to educate and speak out when I can and where I can, I know that there is always room for improvement.

We hope you enjoyed this weeks "Any one can be a pinup post"; Melissa has shown us what it means to be a light for others, to share our joy and we hope you enjoyed reading about her. Not only does she have an amazing taste in fashion she is smart, kind and strong all things we strive to be on a daily basis. We are so glad that we were able to share her story with you today.
