Stop and Smell the Flowers

Everybody knows accessories can make or break an outfit (or atleast you do now!). Especially in a pinup wardrobe they're essential to really tying the whole look together. They can also make an outfit go from drab to fab with a simple addition of one or two. Today we wanted to focus on one that works particularly well for us, especially since we strive to keep our looks as low maintenance as possible. This isn't because we're lazy (we like to call it energy conservation), it's because we're college students who are constantly rushing from class to class. Our constant movement and hurrying causes hair to definitely be low on our list of priorities because who wants to spend hours on it simply for it be ruined by the end of the day? (Especially in this florida humidity and heat, it just ain't happening). That being said we still want to have that "pinup" look without having to put in all the effort. It's a rather useful cheat if you will and I'm sure some of you have already got an inkling of what it is. We're focusing on one hair accessory in particular, hair flowers and this is because of how versatile and easy they are to use. Since we are living on college student budgets we can't really afford to splurge on accessories especially hair flowers since they can get rather pricey thus we decided to try our hand at DIY hair flowers. We got everything (minus the glue gun) at the dollar tree. Two different sets of flowers and one set of clips were a steal at a little over $3; considering hair flowers depending where you buy them can go for a pretty penny.  We decided to make this our first real pictorial, and we hope you enjoy!

Things needed:

  1. Hot glue gun/glue sticks (could do craft glue but might not get great results)
  2. assorted fake flowers (we suggest smaller ones as the larger ones are harder to style)
  3. Hair clips (would be easier to use a clip that has a flat side to glue on)

Process:
  1.  Remove flowers from stem and the leaves from the flower( do not throw leaves away)
  2.  Glue the leaves back onto the flower (this will help camouflage the clip)
  3. Allow the glue to dry and position the clip into place
  4.  Glue the clip to flower and hold for a couple seconds until the glue has dried
  5.  Let the hair flowers dry (we recommend waiting a few hours for best results)
  6. WEAR THEM AND LOOK FABULOUS

“The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all.” is one of our personal favorite quotes about flowers, and this one is from the movie Mulan! (Thought you'd escape a Disney reference did you ? We just couldn't help it !)

We hope you enjoyed this clever little pictorial and are now planning away all sorts of wonderful combinations to make hair flowers. We want to stress that we are in no way experts at making hair flowers and there are of course better, more expensive alternatives HOWEVER we strive to provide options for those who aren't able to spend more than $5 on a hair flower. We are Pinups on a budget after all so this is a cheap and easy way to achieve the perfect accessory with things you can easily find at a crafts store or the dollar store (Thats right we said it, the dollar store and we proudly proclaim its one of our favorite stores). There are of course a few things we'd change as mentioned above but all in all we had a blast making them and finding ways to style them. We even dressed up for the occasion and debuted them with outfits inspired by the colors of the flowers. We can only grow and get better from here and we hope you'll follow us on this journey. Never be afraid to look at things in a different way or even try a different approach, you'll be amazed at the things you can accomplish once you let your mind explore. We urge you to never let money get in the way of doing what makes you happy because there is always a way to do it.(or in our case dress in a way that makes you happy, accessories are like clothes right?).
If you have any comments, questions or concerns feel free to comment below and we'll do our best to not only reply but help as soon as we can.

As always thanks for reading,

May your days be filled with pretty dresses & or fabulous dapper clothes + a lot of happiness.

  1. This is such a useful tutorial! My hot glue gun has been sitting in a drawer for way too long. And I loved the Mulan quote. That movie is SO GOOD! You both look super gorgeous with your handmade hair flowers, and your outfits are both too cute for words!!
