Vintage with a twist

Petticoats, parasols, and picnics… oh, my! In downtown Orlando there is an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this place? Lake Eola of course! On the lake there are numerous swans to take pictures of and admire, some of which are actually boats you can rent! (We promise you can tell the difference once you see them haha). It's a beautiful area with a playground for kids, as well as beautiful scenic areas for us adults to explore. We went to Lake Eola for a meet up for a group we are in, Vintage Updos for Modern Girls and what adventures ensued are serendipitous to say the least. One of the fellow group members the always lovely Kasi arrived before us, found what she thought to be our group and told us where to meet her. We were assured she had found the group and we'd all sit down and talk about our love of all things vintage. When we arrived we saw a large group of beautiful dresses and food spread about (though in the back of our minds something seemed off) and we sat down and introduced ourselves. The lovely ladies we had just joined, unbeknownst to us, were members of a completely different group whom happened to be meeting at the the exact same time and place for a picnic! They thought we were part of their group and we thought they were a part of ours (to be fair our group has thousands of members some we've never even seen before). We just ended up combining groups and having a wonderful time. Regardless of how different we all looked we sat down to eat and soon were laughing and chatting away as if we'd known each other for ages.

They were dressed in adorable dresses with frills, cats, flowers and ruffles… they were Lolita's! We crashed a local Lolita meet up, The Central Florida Lolita Society to be exact! Now what followed can only be described as the most successful fashion culture clash of all time, they welcomed us not only with open and loving arms but were also incredibly kind and friendly, they made the picnic an unforgettable occasion. We bonded over hair, makeup, all things girly, and of course Pokemon Go (yes even us vintage loving gals aren't immune to its charms). It's not often that we all find people who just click with us, because let's be honest not everyone dresses the way we do or likes the same things we do. Although our styles had obvious differences, it's those differences that ultimately brought us together and made for the most enjoyable picnic we've ever had. Sometimes the most amazing friendships can come from the most unexpected places and that's why we want to urge you our dear readers to NEVER rule anyone out. Just because they look a little different from you whether that be style wise or not, doesn't mean that you won't get along. On the contrary this amazing accidental event goes to show how the power of fashion transcends all barriers. We are ladies from all walks of life, from different parts of florida and even at different stages in our lives, yet we were all able to overlook that and become friends. Now if that doesn't show you the power of fashion we don't know what will.

We know that we talk about the vintage/pinup world quite a lot (it's what our blog is about after all), but we never touch up on different types of fashion. Some of you might be wondering “what is Lolita?” Lolita fashion is a Japanese fashion subculture that is known for Victorian/Edwardian inspired pieces, what first started out as a trend in Japan has grown to all parts of the world (another shining example of just how incredible fashion really is). We have always been enthralled by the beautiful outfits that Lolita's wear, to us they resemble the porcelain dolls we had growing up. They very much resemble princesses in our eyes and we'd be lying if we said we hadn't thought of dipping our toes into their world from one time or another. The best part about Lolita is that there's something for everyone. Among the Lolita subculture there are other sub fashions or styles of Lolita from the sweet doll looking Lolita, to the lovers of black and all things gothic and everything in between you're sure to find a style you love. These lovely ladies showed us various styles while happily embracing ours and we couldn't be more glad that we met. What happens when Pinup meets Lolita? You'll have to keep scrolling to see for yourself!

You know that saying when life gives you lemons? Make some Lemonade. Well after today's events we've decided to modify that saying. When life gives you a perfect accidental meet up... you make the most out it and have the best picnic ever! After all it's not everyday that happy little accidents like that happen. We hope you enjoyed this rather different take on a VUFMG meet up, it wasn't anything at all like we expected it to be and it was definitely for the best. We had a wonderful time sharing snacks and sweets over stories of hair styling, sharing lipstick secrets and talking about Lolita fashion versus Pinup/vintage inspired fashion. It was a blast being around a bunch of like minded ladies who wanted nothing more than to make friends and who definitely didn't mind some fun and impromptu photo sessions for the blog. We left the gathering feeling not only a sense of joy but new found camaraderie as well, they joined our group and vice versa showing what a positive overall effect we had on one another. Sometimes things don't go quite as planned but that doesn't mean it has to be a bad thing, after all we're all just trying to find a place where we belong, heck just someone to call a friend. No matter what style you ascribe too whether that be Lolita/Pinup etc. smile and say hello because you never know what that conversation will lead too. Life is far too short to play it safe or to adhere to one type of group, after all it's our differences that make us all the more unique and create wonderful friendships.

We hope after reading todays post we've instilled a bit of confidence in you to go out there and make the most of every encounter, even if it doesn't go quite how you planned because you'll be amazed what can happen when life throws a happy little accident your way.
